That's what amazes me -- the number of intelligent people who condemn the film without ever having seen it.

I don't think the film could have any value for children--nor for most adults (from what I have read ABOUT it). But for those whom seek to understand human nature, I suspect it might give insight...

IMO, it's a specimen of child abuse, but because of the trappings, it will be treated respectfully, or at least contempt will remain mostly unexpressed.

I agree with you if you mean that it's a potentially traumatizing act on the part of parents who take their children.

And in terms of it being treated respectfully, etc., precisely true. IMO this is because religion's involved-- or better said, Mel's version of religion.
