Braveheart, Gladiator and Silence of the Lambs were voted Best Picture by the Motion Picture Academy of Arts and Sciences. Same for Rocky and Raging Bull. Saving Private Ryan garnered numerous Oscars as well. Fact is, Hollywood champions a level of blood and gore that would make your skin crawl. I wouldn't take a kid to any of those movies (except maybe Rocky). Teenagers, maybe.

Hollywood champions great storytelling. Other pictures which tell great stories but have comparatively little gore have also won Oscars. Of the ones you named, Braveheart I thought was the best picture. I don't particularly like gore in pictures, and often avoid pictures solely because they reportedly have excessive gore. I finally watched Braveheart years later and was captivated by the story, and thus tolerated the violence.

My oldest kid is 12. She wants to see these pictures, and I have told her that when she is older she can, but not now (I agree Rocky might be ok at that age, but none of the others). I don't think the answer is to censor Hollywood for making these movies. The answer is to make appropriate choices about what we are comfortable seeing and what is and is not in our childrens' best interest to see. Bad parents will find some way to mess up their kids, in the end. They don't need Hollywood's help.
