If you had kids, where would you choose to live- with an eye to long term investment (and by investment I mean of one's time) in the place you chose?

Yes Dale, this is a very good point. With an enlarged safety net - I think the free trade argument is much stronger.

Efficiencies in the overall system from free trade are then shared more equally among the entire population - and all benefit. Also - those that lose jobs are much better protected. I agree with this.

Too bad in the US - the trend has been toward the opposite view.

Most Americans don't have the means or the skills to make that choice. I can see a lot of them getting caught in a vice without a European-style safety net in place.
