I really wonder what Americans will do for a living in the future. Bush wants to let immigrants in with "work permits" to fill any job that an employer can say they couldn't fill with an American. Most people have visions of fruit-pickers and McDonalds burger assemblers, but there's nothing in his plan to prevent any job from being "onshored" to cheaper competition. When manufacturing was leaving, the former manufacturing workers were urged to become "knowledge workers" in the "new economy". Where to go now that the new economy is leaving too? If I were a CEO who could improve profits every quarter from here on out by offshoring, why wouldn't I?
