A sperm is one step removed from a zygote.

An armed person is one step removed from being a killer. All he has to do is use the weapon. "One step" can be a very big step.

So if an alien with reason and compassion is in a fire with a human who is irrational and cruel and mean-spirited--who would you save if you could save only one?

How many "who would you save in the fire" hypotheticals do we need? In a real life situation there would be other considerations besides their demeanors, intellect and personality to consider, and the differences in those areas would likely be more complex then just one being irrational and cruel and the other being reasonable an compassionate, but limiting myself to just those considerations I would probably save the alien. Generally I would give sentient sapient aliens the same consideration I would give humans.
