"Were those brutally tortured and murdered in the Inquisitions martyrs?"

Perhaps some were. In Spain it was mostly catholic Jews who were killed and then Muslims. In the 12th and 13th centuries the Waldensians and the Cathars were the primary concern. In the 15th century it was Wycliffe and followers.

This is the problem when a religion arrogantly claiming to have Absolute Certainty and support from God (Christianity, Islam, Judaism, Catholicism, etc) becomes a State Religion as happened in the reign of Constantine. Now we have megalomania backed by the sword. Certainly something in the history of humanity that can only be faced with shame and disgust.

It took centuries to break the yoke of this immense evil. What shall we substitute for it? Would an Islamic or Protestant State be better able to herd us into God's corral and into heaven?

I suggest that whenever we hear religious people from any belief yammering that they speak on behalf of God...that we make sure they NEVER get a hearing in the State. We must separate all the "Hands of God" from swords, guns, and torture equipment. Church and State must be kept a million miles apart.
