There were two things that lead to Clinton's success,

The first was the internet bubble - it produced a huge amount of wealth and jobs. California is the example - GD spent like the situation was permanent - very very very very stupid,

The other was free trade - NAFTA and GATT. These policies prevented inflation and allowed the money supply to grow without inflation.

For Kerry - the bubble is burst and he is no longer for NAFTA and GATT - but gee - once upon a time he was for NAFTA!
