tonto, some say they may use immigration to bump up workforce numbers to meet baby boomers retirement needs. Other option is to increase taxes from 15% to 30%, or extend retirement age, or reduce benefits. The later ones are quite negative to the retires. On another note, am sensing Kerry has scared off corporate America with this benedict CEO comment. Any chance Kerry can make a firm stand on his positions, to reduce this fear and thus increase his votes? I noticed Kerry didn't vote on the budget the other day (nor did Edwards). This makes me wonder if Kerry is avoiding taking a firm stand, for fear he may turn voters off. If so, I actually think such a strategy to be intentionally vague may backfire. I do think Kerry has more to gain by being clear about his positions. He needs to start defining and articulating his positions to the public quickly. I think he would have a better chance at winning, if he did this. With Nadar running, we can't afford lost votes due to ambiguity in positions. Regards, Amy J

Well, Greenspan planned for boomer retirement in the early 80s which resulted in essentially a doubling of fica taxes at that time, which was supposed to create a surplus for years that would be used to fund SS for the boomers. And as you know we have had those surpluses, FOR YEARS, and that money has been spent. I am no fan of the SS system, if it were up to me I would turn it into a welfare system only. But to tax the workforce for years like this and then turn around and give the money away and then say "we're broke" won't fly.
