Yes and if Huey Long had become president we'd have become a dictatorship and joined the Germans in WWII. <vbg> Seriously though Carl, one night stands are one thing, but continuously running performances lasting years ala Israel is not likely to be resolved by the OWLYERS in this country. OBL appears to understand and intend this perception. But then he clearly wants to die for his beliefs. More ominously, I suspect Iran is so openly intent on obtaining "The" bomb because they perceive the same thing. Why would they bother with the effort and risk if they didn't feel compelled to do so out of a very great need. Perhaps my perception is wrong and OBL is a monster of one. But Israel's history ...no, mankind's history, suggests that OBL's arrest conviction and punishment, or the instantaneous elimination of all AQ, will not solve the problem. 0\|0

*Wars are very clearly military problems, but the only military problem we have right now is that Bush got a little trigger happy.* Carl, I hope you are able to maintain your optimism and I really hope someone steps up with the charisma to make the Owlyers/FBI/CIA solution work out. But one last point before I shut up. Owlyers and politicians are in the business of giving people what they think people want. It matters little whether their name is Lincoln, Busch or Kerry. A politician can tell people that the CIA and FBI will protect them, but if such politician fails to make good on that promise, there will always be another politician who will come along and promise something more. It seems to me that that is the only way a politician with Sharon's background could have come to power. And I am quite positive that The Wall there is no more than the latest desperate attempt to make good on a promise of security which Israelies have demanded. Saddly I see no reason to think that politicians in the U.S. are any better or worse than those in Israel. But if I had to put money on it I'd have to take their FBI and CIA equivalents over ours. In any case the threat which OBL and radical Islam present have yet to show themselves amenable to criminal justice techniques. Criminals customarily do not embrace death. Customarily, once they reach an appropriate age, they don't even embrace crime for the most part. If AQ is able to pull off one or two additional performances in the U.S. of the type they just gave in Spain, you will not find any CIA or FBI Officers willing or able to guarantee the then sitting President that they can prevent such actions. And that will not be acceptable to that President because it won't be acceptable to his constituents. [ed., I think it quite likely that the CIA and FBI have already advised of their inability to solve this problem, and suspect that fact weighed heavily in the decision to go into Afghanistan and Iraq both. ...But I am trying to be optimistic.] 0\|0 PS I can't spell AND I can't type fast. :)
