I thought that was a good review, one of the few where the reviewer doesn't let his views on the theology of it interfere with his appraisal of the film as a film.

I think the most important line in the early part of the film was "No man can carry such a burden," given that Jesus' carrying of the burden comprises 70% of the movie.

"He is not a follower of Jesus and may not even be a Jew. I like to see him as the film’s token atheist, though I am sure that Gibson did not intend him that way."

In the movie a roman refers to Simon as a jew (the only other person identified as a jew, except for Jesus). I imagine Mel inserted that part to counter charges that he was portraying jewish people in an overly negative manner.

"With each stumble, Mary is torn by grief and pity, by the heart-wrenching concern of a mother for her son. This may be the most emotionally affecting element of the entire film, and should genuinely move the viewer to tears."

He got that right, those scenes were heartbreaking. If Maia Morgenstern isn't nominated for an Oscar, there is no justice in the world.

The reviewer tries to review a subject in the movie that he completely fails to understand. This is not surprising coming from a non-Christian who is trying to "look in".

Complaints about graphic violence are not exaggerated; indeed, what we are presented with is an orgy of brutality, a glorification in its own way of suffering and human cruelty.

Jesus became sin for us and God punished that sin and shed Jesus's blood to atone for all sin. Jesus was the willing sacrifice. You have to understand that He didn't have to do it for us. He was with God already, perfect, He needed nothing. Yet He allowed Himself to become a man and then suffer and die in this way to save man that had been lost. Without shedding of blood there can be no forgiveness. I posted on how the shedding of blood according to the law covered sins for a time. Read this post. The reviewer has no idea of what was going on spiritually throughout the suffering, death, and resurrection of Jesus.

Might as well include another POV on the Gibson "Passion" movie

...this one from the "Biblical" perspective from those who do KNOW who God REALLY is !
letgodbetrue.com

OK , here goes
(ad infinitum , etc)

The movie is a two-hour commercial for Catholicism

It is a Catholic movie. It is based on the traditions of Rome, rather than the Bible. It was produced, directed, acted, and endorsed by Catholics. It is a catechism and commercial for Catholicism. Rome’s history of opposition to the Bible and present practices contrary to the Bible make this a grave concern. The movie is based on the Rosary’s five sorrowful mysteries, follows the Stations of the Cross, emphasizes Jesus on a crucifix, includes many Catholic superstitions, and gives Mary a preeminent role.

on , cont'd ...on & on ...

Conclusion

You will sin. If you attend the movie other than to critically review it, you will sin. We do not determine sin, but God does and has. God gave His verdict in the Bible. It is your duty to read and obey it. It is a Catholic movie, violates the Second Commandment, presents another Jesus, is not Scriptural, and is condemned by its widespread approval. It has no bottom line and cannot have any positive influence for truth or righteousness. It mongrelizes religion and sells Catholicism by its obvious ecumenical intent.

You will harm your soul. The Jesus of the movie is not the Jesus of the Bible. The Jesus of the movie is not the Jesus of God. You are going to the devil to get a view of Jesus, and you will not undo the damage easily. The Jesus you see is that which Satan wants you to see. He does not call on you to repent and choose a life of self-denial and godliness, because that is contrary to the devil’s agenda. He does not want you to see the Jesus before Whom he trembled, and by Whom he will soon be cast into hell.

You will trust the wrong Jesus. You will put your trust in another Jesus, another gospel, and another spirit, all of which are false (II Cor 11:1-4,13-15). You will think you know Jesus, when you do not. You will think you know how He thinks of you, but you will not. You will be deceived into confidence of your relationship with Him, without a true basis for that confidence. You will be lulled into religious sleep by a gentle religious guru unlike anything in the Bible. One day soon you will be very surprised!

You will harm your mind. Once you allow Mr. Gibson to brainwash you with a sight-and-sound show of the devil’s illusion of Jesus Christ, you will be unable to easily purge your memory of the images and impulses. Reading the Bible, listening to preaching, hearing songs about His death, or whatever godly means you use to consider Jesus Christ will recall the movie. You will be praying to a Hollywood, synthetic Jesus of various takes from various scenes. You will have no clue about the Jesus of God.

You will compromise Bible Christianity. The religion of Jesus Christ is not gathering with pagans and carnal Christians to get emotional about an animated crucifix. The obvious ecumenical intent of this movie is contrary to the separation demanded by the Bible. The call of the Lord Jesus Christ is to come out of Rome and her false Christianity (Rev 18:4). Your life may never be the same. You will become a deceived victim of the great deception (II Thess 2:9-12).
