Despite my opposition to the war, I think this is a sinister precedent, which shows terrorists that they can affect the outcome of an election with an act of terror. I think that pulling troops from Iraq is a mistake on the part of the Spaniards.

Damn, there may be hope for you, yet.

Al,

re: Despite my opposition to the war, I think this is a sinister precedent, which shows terrorists that they can affect the outcome of an election with an act of terror. I think that pulling troops from Iraq is a mistake on the part of the Spaniards.

Yes, and no. They ran on a platform of removing the troops from Iraq. The tragedy happened before the election, and the public voted, in essence, to recall the troops. I don't think they should change the platform that got them elected. That would certainly piss off the electorate.

That said, I agree with the spirit of your post. The terrorists win be affecting society with relatively scant resources. The more we let them affect us, the more they win. The reason why 9/11 was so effective was not the tragic loss of life, but our response, including huge deficit spending, two wars, freedom repression...

So I agree in principle. But in Spain, the voters have spoken.

Al, I agree with you that Spain's pullout is disturbing but not unexpected. In any case, their involvement in Iraq was symbolic with only 1500 troops.

The question is how do you extricate yourself from a mess? The terrorists are not going to stop until we are out of the ME........to pretend otherwise is foolhardy. So do you do like Israel.......slug it out year after year with neither side getting anywhere?

There are no easy answers. Bush opened a pandora's box by making this 'bold' move into Iraq. And I'll tell you.....the questionable people in his administration don't know how to get us out of this mess.

You are absolutely correct on that call. While Ted is filled with glee, the world should mourn, as the Spanish let Al Qaeda decide its elections. And no matter how much you want to spin it, it is a bad thing. Whose election will Al Qaeda try to influence next. Ours?? And will we respond the same way. It will be a sad day, when the world is ruled by appeasement.
