Yes, and no. They ran on a platform of removing the troops from Iraq. The tragedy happened before the election, and the public voted, in essence, to recall the troops. I don't think they should change the platform that got them elected. That would certainly piss off the electorate.

My understanding is that Aznar was projected to win easily before the bombing. The vote seems like an emotional response to the bombings that may or may not be in the long term best interest of Spain, and probably is not in the best interest of the fight against terror...that said, the fundamental problem remains, which is that bush's policies serve to destabilize adn divide the world.

Listen to me...man, I am losing it... :>)

Yes they did. However, the Socialists were losing in the polls big time, on that issue. The bombings swung the sentiment to them, not the soldiers issue. Hopefully, the new prime minister, will enforce an even tougher campaign against Al Qaeda, so terrorism, doesn't win in the end.

Meanwhile the markets are a mess today. They too bought into the rhetoric that Bush was winning the war against terrorism. The fact that al Qaeda can blowup trains in Spain with impunity has them badly rattled.

Its too bad......people are always looking for the simplistic solutions to our problems. They want to believe so badly that shock and awe will do the trick. This is a war unlike any we have fought before........and we need to accept that fact and do what needs to be done. There are no simple solutions like shock and awe. Its going to be much harder than that.
