Read that Chinese article if you want to know the detail. It does sound like like a setup, and it made some difference to gain some sympathy votes, since Chen only won by 30,000 more votes<g>

I read some comment comparing Chen's shooting as the Parliament fire in Germany before Hitler got elected<g>

TAIPEI (Reuters) - Taiwan President Chen Shui-bian survived an assassination attempt Friday while campaigning on the eve of a presidential election, escaping with a bullet wound to the stomach.
Vice President Annette Lu was also wounded in the attack in the southern city of Tainan but was not badly hurt, officials said. The pair were rushed to hospital, but a hospital official said later that they had left to fly back to the capital.

Officials said Saturday's election would go ahead as planned.

Chen and Lu had been traveling in an open-top jeep through Tainan streets, waving to crowds, when unknown assailants shot at them at 1:45 p.m. (12:45 a.m. EST).

Police said they believed two standard handguns had been used and at least two shots fired. They had yet to make any arrests.

China had no immediate comment. Beijing regards Taiwan as a renegade province to be recovered, by force if necessary.

Chen, who was not wearing a bullet-proof vest, was rushed to hospital in Tainan, his home town, where he received 14 stitches in a five-inch long, one-inch deep wound. Television reports said the 54-year-old president was able to walk in for treatment.

Lu, 59, was hit in the right leg and had to be assisted but her condition was not serious, officials said.

It was unclear if the attack in a country where such political violence is virtually unknown would affect the election outcome. Analysts said most voters had already made their choice based on policy and were unlikely to be swayed by emotion now.

Chen's chief of staff, Chiou I-jen, told a news conference that the president had called for calm.

Both the DPP and the opposition Nationalists called off campaigning after the shooting. Continued ...

I never thought about a pellet gun + bulletproof vest. As you say the medical details should give some clues. In any case it's a pity for the Taiwan people that they have such a president. How easy it would be to issue some statements about being eternally part of China and continue on their own way for a few decades until there is no difference in the two systems. Sad.

References I have seen in English use the terms "Standard caliber" and "small caliber"

If a .22 cal, there are 3 rounds readily avaILIBLE -

the .22 short
the .22 long
and the .22 long rifle, the most commonly used in the US and the most powerful of the 3.

.22 shorts are used in arcade shooting ranges.
the shorts would be a good choice, as limited damage would result.

If larger caliber centerfire rounds are used, it is easy to load them with less powerful powder charges and also to pre- damage the bullet so it would have the appearance of the bullet distortion seen in a standard round. Accuracy over a short distance would not matter.

I have not seen a picture with both Chen's head and his wounded body together yet<g>

More suspicions from medical viewpoint.
1) gun shot wound is usually surrounded by burning edge, while burning wound is surrounded by dot. Chen's wound (the one in the media) is surrounded by dot;
2) usually gun shot is not treated with stitches because it runs a high risk of infection. But Chen's wound has been treated with stitches.

So is it really gun shot wound as they claimed?

Of course, we may never ever find out<g>
