The market began its decline at least in part in anticipation (correct, as it turns out) that Bush might become President and that his isolationist policies (which have since reversed to be unthinking interventionist policies -- just as bad) and neglect of duty might result in ruin for the economy.

The rest is history. A few bad actors were exposed in the process; they don't account for the rest.
