I saw a rerun of an interview with Hans Blix. Blix thinks he got rid of the anthrax and some other stuff in 2001. He still cannot figure out why Saddam didn't do it under the supervision of the inspectors, which was required, or why there was no adequate paperwork. He also cannot figure out some of the obstructionism which aroused suspicion at the time, and played into the Administrations hands, like requiring the scientists to be "handled", instead of interviewed privately.

I guess I am saying that you must be at least a brick or two shy of a load to be a dictator, and that some dictators are more screwed up than others. Therefore, "madman" and "dictator" go together like ham and eggs, at least in the most egregious cases of brutalism and the cult of personality........

The dictator business isn't all peaches and cream, it is one of the most hazardous of occupations, with many (probably fair to say "most") dictators meeting a bad end.

Actually most do quite well, either living out their dictatorship (Stalin, Mao), or else getting a golden retirement (Amin). It's the Hitlers who are the exception.
