George Bush Creates His Own Monster

To mark the anniversary of his war against Iraq, George Bush today pleaded with foreign ambassadors to commit to his endless, apocalyptic war against terror. "There is no neutral ground," Bush said, "between good and evil, freedom and slavery, life and death."

In an apparent attempt to divert attention away from the original reason he gave for war, Bush argued that "There are still violent thugs and murderers in Iraq" and "no one can argue that the Iraqi people would be better off with the thugs and murderers back in the palaces."

Bush made no mention of those "weapons of mass destruction" that he claimed were an immediate danger to America; those have slipped from his lexicon, replaced now by constant references to Iraq as the center of terrorism. But, as the French Foreign Minister Dominique de Villepin noted, the current and very real danger within Iraq is Bush's creation. "Let's stick to the facts:" he said. "Terrorism didn't exist in Iraq before the war; today, that country is one of the main centers of terrorism worldwide."

George Bush sees the world differently than most of us: his is black and white, good and evil, freedom and slavery. In this simplistic yet unrealistic world, there is no need to consider causes or effects. Where evil exists -- and under his policies it is growing rapidly -- it must be crushed with overwhelming violence.

What Bush must be coming to see, however belatedly, is that he is out of step with the rest of the world. One by one, our allies are backing away from his simplistic logic. First Spain, then Poland distanced themselves from Bush and his war and appear to be shifting toward a stronger Europe. And it must be noted that it is the people of Europe, not their leaders, who have turned against Bush. The Pew Research Center found precipitous declines in Europe's approval of America, with support in some countries falling below 10%. Even more alarming, significant numbers of Europeans believe terror attacks on America are now justified.

This mistrust and hatred toward America is the direct result of George Bush's policies. And yet he can see none of this, blinded as he is to shades of gray. At some point, no doubt, Pakistan -- which is one of the countries the Pew report found was most angry at him -- will simply slip from the "good" category into the "evil." Then, if history is any guide, we will see Bush trump up charges against them (Pakistan has nukes! We can't wait for the mushroom cloud!), then begin to clamor for war, and finally invade.
