"where only a small percentage ever have any meaningful travel or contact with other cultures" The islamic nations don't want us to visit them, and would prefer that we not have any contact with them at all, other than to buy their oil. I lived in an apartment building with a lot of arabic muslims for several years, and not only would my neighbors not engage in the normal social niceties, they wouldn't even look at me, just pretended I didn't exist. On the other hand there was a christian iranian girl on the floor that was as sweet as honey.
