RE: "But five big Indian tech-service companies -- Tata Consultancy Services, Infosys Technologies (INFY ), Wipro Technologies, Satyam Computer Services (SAY ), and HCL Technologies -- report that their sales to North America that year were around $2.4 billion."

It's commonly known by investors in India, that the reporting is done differently. I believe they said something like 5% or maybe even as much as 20% overstating of earnings. (Forgot if it was 5%, 15% or 20%.) Either way, if you subtract out the worst case scenario of 20% from 2.4B, there's still an error in the amount of $1.72B. But even that figure doesn't in any way correlate nor explain away 3M jobs.

RE: "A difference of one percentage point in GDP growth equals about 60,000 jobs a month."

That's really interesting to know.

RE: "Commerce collects detailed information only from companies that buy at least $1 million worth of a particular service, such as programming. "

Oh geez, is this true? Anyone know what form a person is suppose to fill out for this. If they don't tell you about a particular form that needs to be filled out, how are you supposed to know? It's not on any corporate tax form I've seen from our CPA firm, nor on any import form from a law firm (that's one of the best in the Valley), nor on fedex custom forms, nor from customs itself. The gov't is probably not including startups and small businesses in their count, even though small businesses actually make up the bulk of the USA in terms of jobs. Geez, no wonder the govt's numbers are wrong. They should really fix this.

Regards,
Amy J

<<From Business Week magazine as posted by Original Mad Dog....

"The economic statistics collected by the U.S. government are probably as honest and accurate as any in the world. Perfect, though, they're not. Collecting data about the American economy is a boundless challenge on a limited budget. And it's even harder in periods of dramatic change -- like today.""

Thanks for printing that story, Mad Dog. I'm reposting for Amy J.'s and Elroy's benefit, just to make sure they see the point I was trying to make in some earlier posts.

Attempting to appeal to common sense when people are claiming their government is "cooking numbers" seems to be a losing battle. Glad that a national magazine sees it the same way I do, for the small amount this is worth.
