I don't know. Funny that after I posted this, Business Week ran an article questioning the claims by business leaders and government that offshoring is a small number of jobs and $$. I've been thinking this forever, along with the question as to whether offshored work is being counted in the US GDP, artificially inflating our GDP. This article says the US govt is claiming 200 mm of offshoring while the big 4 indian offshorers are at 2.4 billion or 12x our claims. But that is just the big indian consultancies. It leaves off China and (more important) the huge number of US firms that are hiring directly in India- this is the HP, Cisco, Oracle case. GDP Growth: Are The Numbers Too Rosy? While still small, such "offshoring" is rapidly growing. Yet it's not fully accounted for in government statistics -- an overlooked case of the government getting the numbers wrong. Just one example: The Commerce Dept. reports that Americans paid just $209 million in 2002 to unaffiliated companies in India for business, professional, and technical services. But five big Indian tech-service companies -- Tata Consultancy Services, Infosys Technologies (NasdaqNM:INFY - News), Wipro Technologies, Satyam Computer Services (NYSE:SAY - News), and HCL Technologies -- report that their sales to North America that year were around $2.4 billion.
