"... can buy 5 times the machine and dump Windows ME for XP for just a few hundred bucks..." . thecow, Please expand on what I say next as I'am new to the latest & greater stuff (about 15 years behind the times) since I just jumped from Win3.1 to WinXP. . re: Outrageous Deal - 2.8Ghz - 512MB - 80GB - 48x CD etc etc etc . If one does go thus route, then it might be best not to have installed just a CD-ROM that can only READ, but make sure it can also Record, or Record & re-Write. . But I'am new to this stuff eventhought my new eMachine has the CD able to Record & re-Write, all I have so far done is make a back-up copy of the three CDs that came with it to put back onto the hard drive what was preinstalled. I haven't yet tried the "restore" CDs yet, but I'am thinking that if I put them into the CD and do a Power Off/On that it will assume that the harddrive has just been re-formatted, as I think this is what its for and you will not be asked where you want the CD contents to be placed, but it will be loaded automaticcally over anything on the harddrive. ok, But so far I have learned something that is common sense to understand, but it escaped me until I actually hit it. While my CD unit is both Record and re-Writeable, if I put a CD that is just the R type (Record) then no matter how much stuff I write onto the CD, its a one shot deal and I cannot later write any more data onto it. Here i made the mistake to assume that if I filled it only 1/2 full that I could later fill up the unwritten 1/2 with more stuff, but nope, once your write request is done, the CD is now a Read-Only. But if I'am mistake here GREAT :o) but I think I need to buy more expensive CDs with RW ability to go back and not only be able to write on un-written surfaces, but it also allows me to delete and re-use the surface of the CD. . Bottom line, if order a new CD, done get the ROM type even if its for free. ROM (read only memory) to me is like buying a CD loaded with data that can only be read, where the maufacturer did the Write'n to a CD-R(ecord) at the factor that made it. doug
