Note the last sentence.PM, Latham trade Iraq accusations PRIME Minister John Howard and Opposition leader Mark Latham have redoubled their attacks on each other over Australia's role in Iraq. Mr Howard has accused Mr Latham of making despicable comments over his suggestion the prime minister had plotted to hold a welcome home parade for Australian personnel during this year's expected election campaign. Mr Latham in turn has demanded an apology from the government over its claims he had received no official briefings on Iraq. But the prime minister, although admitting Mr Latham had received briefings from government agencies, downplayed their importance and said they had little to do with the situation in Iraq. In a sign of the increasing tension over the issue, Labor's foreign affairs spokesman Kevin Rudd criticised Mr Howard for being the only leader of one of the occupying forces in Iraq not to have visited the country. He said United States President George W Bush and British leader Tony Blair had both gone into Iraq, as had the Polish prime minister. "Guess which member of the four occupying powers, the four countries which made up the coalition of the willing, hasn't bothered to go anywhere near the place? The prime minister of Australia," he said. Mr Rudd said neither Mr Howard nor Foreign Affairs Minister Alexander Downer had visited Afghanistan since the war on terror began there more than two years ago. In the Senate, which does not hold a government majority, senators have called for a defined exit strategy from Iraq and a military withdrawal as soon as practicable. theaustralian.news.com.au lurqer
