Jane" was among the four U.S. civilian contractors killed in Fallujah, Iraq, last week. Scott Helvenston, 38, a former U.S. Navy SEAL, was one of four contractors working for Blackwater Security Consulting who were killed when their vehicle was hit by rocket-propelled grenades. Helvenston, who lived in Oceanside, Calif., spent three months training Moore for her role in "G.I. Jane." He also had a small role as a U.S. Navy SEAL instructor in the movie, which follows the efforts of a female recruit to become part of the elite squad. "Demi played the part the whole time," he told a reporter for the North County Times. "I was impressed with her persistence and dedication." "It was the first hour of the first day of training," he went on. "We had had calisthenics, push-ups, pull-ups, sit-ups and squat thrusts -- then did a one-mile run. After that, Demi lost it. I'll always remember that picture -- she was bent over her knees, losing her cookies." Helvenston parlayed his 12 years as a member of the elite force into a career as a fitness trainer and stuntman on such movies as "Raising the Titanic" and "Face/Off." His fitness company, Amphibian Athletics, promised to bring a Navy SEAL-style workout to his customers. He also was featured in "Combat Missions," a cable-TV series in which former members of the U.S. military battled against each other in realistic missions. Helvenston, a military pentathlon champion, also competed in the 2000 Raid Gauloises in which competitors mountain biked, walked and climbed a rugged course across the Himalayas. Helvenston was in Iraq to earn $60,000 in three months and to get a taste of combat he had never seen in all his years in the Navy, his friend Mark Divine said. "Scott had a warrior mind-set," said Divine, who was trained as a SEAL by Helvenston. National Post, with AP contributing Copyright © The Sun-Times Company
