What you say is true. But, judging from the nature of some of the bombings especially the attacks in Baghdad's green zone, I am sure that AQ is also there in Iraq now.

Al Qaida didn't exist in Iraq before we invaded.
from what I've read, Al Qaida and Saddam hated each other. One was secular the other religious fanatic. Saddam had persecuted the Islamic fanatics worse than anyone for decades. he went to war against the Mullahs in Iran and killed hundreds of thousands. The Saddam-Al Qaida connection was a gross deliberate Cheney lie.

we are not fighting the Iraqi street,

we are fighting the remnants of the Saddam Hussein Republican Guard, the hard core Sunni followers of Saddam and his tribe and some Al Quida and other professional types.

the street does get worked up as seen by news coverage ie Fallujha but that is not typical of the whole of Iraq.

I agree that we cannot remain an occupier indefinately, it will not work.

you say
""It's even more true when the most powerful political and social force in the country are the clerics of a radical religion and they won't accept a figurehead secular government unless they can pull the strings. Establishing a puppet government won't fool anybody and won't make a difference on June 30th or afterwards.""

I agree with this statement and it is at the crux of the entire Middle East problem.

I suspect a civil war, Shia against everyone else...

the radical Mullahs will prevail as in Iran....

Our covert, black ops will work within this environment.
