Our losses today are inexcusable. We can strangle them yard by yard, inch by inch. To engage without overwhelming tactical superiority is inexcusable.

In many ways this might be the battle that never happened a year ago. As for the cleric - catch him and send him to Gitmo. Let's find out where his money is coming from.

This is the time to not waver. They think they are dealing with Clinton in Somalia. They are wrong.

What I do not understand is why they did not wait. In a few months the US would have been weaker and on the way out. I do not understand the timing at all.

The opposition is not trying to defeat the US military force, but to demonstrate to the US that the war is not over, and that it is still capable of significant action.

That in itself wouldn't mean much, or give them more power, which is what this is about. They are fighting to turn Najaf into another Mogadishu. We must not let them.

One of the basic problems of occupation is that forces inevitably become static to some degree. They are initiating and we are responding.

Geeze, I see it exactly the opposite way.

We are hardly static. Most of our troops are on the move constantly. We have been attacking opposition troops everywhere we find them. The rest of our folks are training the new Iraqi armed forces which is conducting an increasing number of patrols everyday.

They are responding to us and our activity. These guys have been relatively unscathed. They can see their world and power base crumbling around them. They probably think if they don't fight now, they may never get a chance.

It is difficult to get inside the minds of men who are willing to die for their cause. It is not difficult to help them accomplish their mission which is to die for their country.
