We should have talked softly and carried a big stick. When necessary we should have used the stick with a sharp blow and then talked softly again. We should not have gone into the bad guys house and lived with him, fed him, and tried to make him over in our image. It only made sense if we wanted to share in the benefits of living in his house....oil. And I agree with much of what you've said but I don't go quite as far as you do. We're killing and have killed a whole lot of innocent Iraqis, a lot more than the military wants to talk about. The other thing is that we're not always wearing white hats and our troops are not the angels we'd like to think they are. They're human beings and some of them are not good people. In the right circumstances even good people can do terrible things, I've seen it and know of it. The fear, anger and grief of war can make amazing changes in human beings. If we stay in Iraq long enough there will be very little difference between our troops actions against the Iraqis and their actions toward us. The stress of war creates a survival process that kicks in and erodes the rules of civilization. I think you should be careful of any thought process that leads to the conclusion that this is a war against Islam. All ideologies compete with each other but to leap from the war against Islamic terrorists to the war against Islam is a huge mistake. You NEVER win a war against Islam any more than anyone ever won a war against Christianity. Ideas that are militarily attacked get stronger, not weaker, and those that hold powerful ideas never quit fighting and killing in defense of those ideas. Don't go there unless you want to kill every man and woman who is Islamic....? Despite all the brave pronouncements of those who think we can attack and wipe out those who disagree with us, we better limit our attack to those who have attacked and intend to attack us, and then find a way to find common ground with those who believe differently than we do. In the meantime we better shed some arrogance and get out of the kitchen; it's way to hot in there.
