One of my early jobs was maintaining number 9 phone line near the Selway Bitterroot Wilderness area. I'd climb up a tree to replace a dropped hang, and somebody would make a call (by turning the crank, which generated the electrical current needed to ring the bell on the other end). If I had my spurs dug in correctly, I wouldn't fall out. BZZZT!

I paid $100 on eBay for a crank phone just like the ones we used back then. Some things are just, well, timeless.
