The total number was not a problem. It was the " one half were women, children, and elderly." The reporter, being there, knew this made no sense. Everything coming out of the area was that the fight was the local men vs the Marines. Hell, we knew it here! The normal way to handle this would have been,

"claims that half were ....., although the Marines say this is not true."

He not only reported an unsupported claim that he had to know didn't make sense., he did it without a response from the other side! A good reporter does not do this.

This reporter sounds like he has been reporting too many Palestine/Israel conflicts. It is typical of reporting out of there.

I would think you've been on SI long enough to realize these simple "truths" are not all that self-evident.

And the SI community is relatively sophisticated.
