I disagree. Maybe "everybody" doesn't know that. But reporters have to assume some base on knowledge on the part of the audience. They shouldn't have to tell us each report where Iraq is and the difference between a shi'ite and a sunni and the US rules of engagement, and that there are Saddam loyalists and Islamofasciast terrorists, etc., etc. They shouldn't have to tell us that any more than they have to tell us all the history of the Lakers and the Kings and what home team advantage means and that the Lakers tried to buy a championship and that the Spurs are the reigning champions and that the playoffs start next week, and certainly not that these two teams play basketball in the NBA, which stands for National Basketball Association which is the top pro league just to report that the Kings creamed the Lakers today. Just tell us the score. The reporter from Falluja told us the score as reported by the hospital administrator. News space is limited.

Of course people who don't care about basketball don't know any of that background. But they also won't pay attention to the story so it's irrelevant.
