I agree - but then again, what do you trust? Software from a company from another country that might let you watch some of the code, or software where you can read all the code, compile it, test it, modify it etc.? Many devices have no operating system at all, because adding an operating system adds to much bloat and unpredictability. With regards to backdoors, there was a backdoor in Interbase 4, Interbase 5 and Interbase 6. It wasn't found until Interbase went Open Source.

The U.S. DOD is in a special situation, since MSFT is from USA, but for all other countries, MSFT software is a bad choice for defence related equipment and for intelligence agencies. Just ask China.
