THE FOOLISH AMERICAN PUBLIC Re: I listened to a call in talk show on CSPAN a few days ago and was amazed at how many people called in and supported their cause with false information. There has been a gross deterioration in the Washington Journal program in the 18 months or so that I've paid attention to it. Formerly, the proportion of news reading by the hosts was a much larger percentage of the program. Today, they are featuring many more ideologically suspect guests, and have more callers spouting off, though I seem to never be able to get through any longer. Since I was briefly on the air on the morning of the Mobilization for Global Justice on January 29, 2003 I've probably dialed the C-SPAN system a couple hundred times, with no success whatsoever. Additionally, the quality of information being provided by the callers who can get through is decidely less well informed and from a less educated audience than was formerly the case. It's got me wondering if they have a call-blocking software in effect. Or if perhaps there are is simply a larger and less sophisticated audience today.
