You can focus if you want on comparing the relative sharpness of the thinkers

I do think there is a relationship somewhere down the road between the sharpness of the thinkers and the strength of the movement. As we have seen in the last century, alas, the ideas don't have to be correct or humane to get a following, but they do have to make up a coherent philosophy and attract a core of people who really believe them, not just 'dittoheads'. When nobody in a movement really knows what their ideas are anymore, that is 'running on fumes'.
