Fred,
re:"In recent days, a one-year gap in President Bush's Texas Air National Guard service during the height of the Vietnam War has been raised by Democrats...the Boston Globe examined a period from May 1972 to May 1973..."

1972-73 was not the "height of the Vietnam War". In 1972, the United States was withdrawing troops out of Vietnam. Yes, there was a large increased bombing activity by the United States during this time, but in 1972, U.S. troops were actively being pulled out of country. Also, by this time, the jet fighter that President Bush flew, was pulled out of active service. The cease fire was signed on January 23, 1973. I've read that all U.S. combat troops were withdrawn from Vietnam by March 1973.

You should also know, that flying a jet fighter is not the safest profession in the military - even in times of peace.
