Orastraiter, I would have agreed with most of your post a month ago, but I'm concerned that we've lost the lead in Iraq in light of the new Shi'a role in the insurgency. I think we'll be "leading from behind" from here on out. We've missed the openings and the trail leads over the cliff now. We need to consider the option of "failure" in Iraq.

A second disagreement I have is with the implicit assumption that the Iraqi people would select democracy as their form of government. I think it's clear that the majority of the Iraqis will prefer whatever form of government that their clerics tell them to prefer. Whatever you want to call that, I call that a theocracy. If you put democracy vs. faith to a vote in Iraq, I pity democracy.

We've let better opportunities pass us by and now we have no good options. We'll know in a matter of weeks if this pessimistic assessment is accurate or not.

Whoever "wins" this election may well have the sad distinction of presiding over 4 years of erosion to America's prestige, power and prosperity. Of course the other party will hold the newly elected president, whomever that may be, fully responsible. I may vote for Bush; after all isn't if fair that the chickenhawks see the chickens come home to roost?
