<The culture of failure is deeply ingrained in the Arab psyche.> It is remarkable to realize that there are people in the United States who believe that what we are doing in Iraq is providing an uplifting experience for the "Arab psyche". It is this sort of delusion that makes it next to impossible to move beyond the abject failure of neocon ideology that we are watching unfold in Iraq.

He should recognize that Arab countries have been in the rear-guard of cultural and economic life for centuries. The Arab young have been left behind just as surely as their fathers, grandfathers, and great-grandfathers were during their times.

But Friedman, in his writings, is saying the same thing I have been for the past year or more.. There's a baby boom in the middle east. Thus, the number of Arab and muslim youths becoming disillusioned if far greater in quantity.

The regimes of the region are becoming economically stagnant, and will likely suffer even greater difficulty as these children enter adulthood.

So while what you say is correct, it's EVEN MORE CORRECT now, and in future years.

Instead of welcoming this life-ring, they are doing their level best to puncture it, not realizing that they'll drown themselves in the process.

Oh, well, growth is always painful.

But this time around, the consequences suggest that these youths will be blaming the west, donning explosive vests (or worse), and coming looking for us.

Because when they can't obtain earthly rewards, they start looking for heavenly ones.

All it takes is just 1% of muslims under age 18 to adopt militant measures and we'll be facing over 4 million potential militants. One percent of that number can reasonably be expected to act upon their militant beliefs and carryout attacks in order to collect their 72 virgins. That's 400,000 potential suicidal martyrs.

Those are numbers that should frighten the dickens out of every westerner.
