I think I know how they prepared Bush Jr. for the press conference.

There was a point where a reporter asked Bush why he had to see the 9/11 commission accompanied by Cheney, he gave glib answer. When the reporter tried to follow-up Bush got flustered and cut him off again. Then the interesting thing happened. Instead of looking at the pool of reporters to get the next question he rapidly scanned a seating map that was on his podium and picked a specific reporter by name without looking up until after he named him. (someone from Washington Times). He not only got a softball question but you could see from his eyes that he was reading the entire (and long) answer from the teleprompter. Even so, he almost lost it.

A press conference is one of the milder forms of pressure that come with the office. It's truly frightening.

Shadowman,I am 100 posts behind but adding to your post,Bush looked like a beaten man.He was very nervous and he kept licking his lips.Did you notice that at times his tongue would stick to the top of his mouth and then click.
First time that I ever saw a president appear who was in need of a hair cut,but he will get trimmed in November!!!

bush has said he doesn't "know how poor people think". I haven't a clue how he thinks, but he certainly seemed in over his head yesterday trying to field those questions. I've only seen Kerry being quizzed once on the Today show. He obviously had no advance warning of the questions he'd be asked. The questions covered a broad spectrum of issues, and he answered them with specifics.

Maybe Bush had decided he needed to come forward to quell the incompetence talk and suggestion his administration failed during 9/11. Perhaps he thought his speech prior to the Press Conference would answer the questions. Perhaps he thought God would speak through him, for him. He tried the Condi tack of rephrasing the question, answering questions that hadn't been asked. Finally he admitted he's not very good at answering questions. Which of course leads back to the bad decisions he made that make people question his actions.
