Nothing else would have done it.

I can see it now: Bush apologizes and the next question is "Anything else you wish to apologize for, Mr. President? Didn't you stick your gum under your desk in the 6th grade?"

Of course, had he answered one of them, the 'gotcha' would only have begun - Bush Admits Mistakes! Bush Apologizes! Bush says he screwed up! Bush admits opponents were right! Bush Flip-Flops! etc, etc, ad nauseum.

Come on, you know it's true.
