Being successful in one format (books) doesn't guarantee success in radio. That is why Franken et al cannot keep the show going for long.

Al Franken is known as a writer? I believe he is a comic. That would include his writing. I saw a guy on one show, not sure and he was supposedly a host on that new network. He seemed fairly reasonable. He looked a little like Ned Beatty.
