President Bush's answers to the 15 questions fielded by the media. Seven of them....directly and indirectly....asked him to apologize for 9/11. (Does anyone else think that was pathetic?)
---

Absolutely. In fact, my wife -- who voted for Gore in 2000 and has been sitting on the fence over which way to vote in November -- is so disgusted by the way the Left and the Press are attacking the current administration while the country is locked in mortal combat with its enemies, decided after the press conference to vote for Bush.

I, too, am beginning to get riled up. We've got the best of America over there laying their lives on the line for the rest of us, while the Left and the Press are working to undermine their sacrifice.

As i understand it Sistani was reasonably pro-american until Bush 41 abandoned the shia after the last war. He is very wary of us now. He also appears to be realistic enough to know the shiaa cant rule all of iraq in the way they do iran because iraq has a large sunni and kurd component. He just wants the shiaa to get their proper proportional representation as they are about 60% of the population. He is also wary of the iranians as i understand it because they have supported more radical iraqi shiaa clerics. He also seems to believe in separation of church and state within the context of an islamic democracy with a particular iraqi flavor. We need to listen to this guy. The fact that he doesnt like us much doesnt alter the fact that apart from the kurds he may be the iraqi leader who dislikes us the least. mike
PS i have no time at present to go further into sistani than these general comments i have gleaned from articles written over the past couple of months. There are some true scholars on this thread and they probably will refute some of these generalizations above. I await to be pilloried but also hope that sistani can play a key positive role in pacifying iraq even if it doesnt provide a government 100% to our liking. We have to get over ourselves as a model. Hell we elected a president who lost the popular vote and run this country in gridlock. Our founders would puke if they saw how are system actually functions today.
