Was it George Tenet of the CIA saying it would take 5 years to get the CIA up and running properly again?

That seems like a political statement to ask for funding, not a solution.

Someone has to light a fire over there, we need useful data in months not years. There are ways to do it, a special task force, bring back retired members, bring in youngsters who are tops in their majors even if not finished college.

To put these people to work requires an internal change in procedures involving security clearances, background checks, education requirements and promotion procedures. All the turf protection met with in a government organization.

Hi Hawkmoon; Re: "And what about the 2/3 of the Iraqi army that DID fight, or at least showed up? 33% AWOL is certainly serious, but 66% of them, or so, did show up and participate."

There are four Iraqi battalions, so only 25% refused to fight. I don't think that they're AWOL, they just refused to fight Iraqis. It's hardly any wonder, what with the Iraqi Governing Council member calling US actions in Falloujah "illegal". The other battalions have not yet been tested, and so did not "participate". The details are here: #reply-20014862

Re: "What you don't understand is the Islamists have their own version of economics. They plan on hog-tying the world to their control over oil prices and doing everything necessary to bring down the western economies so that they can compete on a equal basis."

Since you don't have a plan to stop them, I'd suggest that you start thinking about owning a more fuel efficient car.

Re: "You obviously have never been in the military Carl.. Because in the units I've been around, it's the junior officers (staff) who come up with the options and the general who approves them, monitors their implementation, makes adjustments as necessary, and cheerleads the entire force involved by pressing the flesh with the troops and passing out medals."

LOL!!! This is you basically admitting that (a) you aren't a general, and (b) the generals that you did run into were incompetent. This is not a nice thing to say about the US military. But you haven't come up with any options, at least as any competent general would require. Shinseki got fired by the Bush administration because he told them that we needed more troops in Iraq. Now they've agreed to send more troops but it's a day late and a dollar short.

Re: "Carl, 190,000 CPA forces overthrew Saddam's regime."

What's your point? I said that getting rid of Saddam wasn't going to be the trouble, it would be the civilians that threw us out of the country. Hell, they should have sent the CIA in with 2 guys to get rid of Saddam. We wouldn't be arguing about it. 189,998 of those guys were unnecessary baggage whose main effect was to piss the locals off against us and to fill body bags.
