I voted for Reagan in 1984.

He railed against the high deficits under Carter - I believe around 60 billion a year. Once in office, he cut
benefits for the middle class in education loans, etc. He cut taxes for the rich. He increased defense spending.

Result - 200 billion a year deficits as far as you could see. And - reduced social spending for the average middle-class person. I won't even get into things he did to the environment. He wasted money in much needless defense spending.

I don't believe Reagan was a great President. He pushed the supply-side nonsense, which I first believed at the time - and it was a disaster.

One of the reasons I began to question the value of the Republican party to middle-class and lower income people. And one of the big reasons I no longer support the Republicans. They have been hijacked by radicals - with right-wing agendas - not even conservative really anymore.

As someone pointed out yesterday on talk radio - which is the fiscal conservative:

1. Our Michigan governor, a Democrat, who has cut more in spending that any other previous governor.

2. Bill Clinton - govt. grew at a slower rate than under Bush. Clinton inherited a $ 290 billion deficit, and left office with a big surplus.

3. Bush - you know his terrible fiscal record.

I would submit 1 and 2 are the fiscal conservatives, and 3 - Bush - is the radical free-spender, who doesn't give a damn about this country's middle-class and poor.

I thought Regan was incompetent when I first heard he was running and he turned out to be one of the most beloved and respected inhabitants of the White House. OTOH, Carter was probably the brightest President in our generation and look at his Presidential legacy. Go figure!
