Could it be that in a few years we will change our opinions on what is going on in Iraq. During the Reagan years, I thought it was criminal that he was increasing the deficit at such an alarming rate. As it turns out, he was spending the Soviet Union into bankruptcy. Cold war won without a drop of blood spilled to the Soviets. In hindsight, perhaps I was wrong and maybe the spending rampage was not such a bad move.

It's possible that we may never know what this current and possible "quagmire" might be sparing us in the decades ahead. I guess history will ultimately figure that out. Having said that, it's always so painful to endure the sacrifice and torment for results that may not be evident for years.

Just a thought ...

Though I'm not too well read on the issue, I think we defend Israel because of what it represents.
My understanding is they are an isolated refuge of Holocaust survivors and descendants. They are surrounded by the same hateful religious fanatics that would gladly like to see them wiped out just like the World Trade Center was. To ignore and not defend would almost be condoning the ways of Hitler.

Blaming Israel for everything is just another bigoted path that has been followed throughout history.

There is very little evidence that the war in Iraq was fought for Israel. Yes, Israelis, and almost all civilized peoples, celebrated the toppling of Saddam Hussein.

As you point out, Iraq was not a real threat to Israel. In fact, Israel has been stopped over the years by the US in following up with its successful bombing of the Iraqi nuclear plant.

The biggest beneficiaries have been Iraq's neighbors, even though they cannot politically admit this. Saudi Arabia, with its historic ties to the US and specifically the Bush family, was probably the primary beneficiary. The Woodward book continues to show this pattern.
