lVRB Power Systems Inc. - Technology & corporate developments
Monday May 10, 12:43 pm ET

VANCOUVER, May 10 /CNW/ - VRB Power Systems Inc. ("VRB Power") is pleased to announce the continued execution of the Company's technology development and implementation plans announced at its AGM in December 2003. Several key initiatives have been met which are integral to the Company's commercialization strategies of the VRB-ESS technology:
The small system development for wireless cell sites, switching centers and remote applications is well advanced and on target, with initial testing of the systems providing positive results. The Company expects to have full working prototypes in field trials (with Magnetek and two other parties) by mid summer 2004.

Also, as a part of the strategic alliance with Highveld Steel and Vanadium Corporation Ltd., up to 2.5 Molar electrolyte has now been successfully tested and ready for implementation in the VRB-ESS. This increase in concentration (from the current 1.6 Molar electrolyte) reflects a greater than 50% reduction in the volume of electrolyte required for a given VRB-ESS installation. The positive impact of this development is in the reduction of costs reflected in the amount (volume) of electrolyte required and by reducing the size (footprint) of an installation, as fewer tanks and other materials are required. The overall reduction to current system pricing will be in the order of 20% .

The Company is also pleased to report that the installation for PacifiCorp in Castle Valley, Utah continues to meet performance expectations and objectives with continuous operation over the last 6 weeks since the ribbon cutting ceremony in March 2004.

These developments continue to enhance the market potential for the VRB-ESS technology in terms of meeting required market price points and has accelerated the Company's targets established in its Business plan.

About VRB Power

Based in Vancouver, B.C. Canada, VRB Power Systems Inc. is an electrochemical energy storage company that has commercialized the patented Vanadium Redox Battery Energy Storage System ("VRB-ESS"). The VRB-ESS is a new enabling technology that can effectively store electricity on demand. The VRB-ESS can provide direct economic benefits to utilities and end users in terms of improved power quality, reliability and energy efficiency. The VRB-ESS is particularly well suited to load levelling (peak shaving), electrical power arbitrage, grid stability enhancements, capital deferment and Remote Area Power Supply (RAPS) applications. It is primarily focused on stationary power sources such as utility substations, commercial buildings, production facilities, telecommunication operations, cellular radio sites, and renewable resource generation such as wind farms - creating the ability to provide "firm" capacity. As a "green" technology, the VRB is characterized by the lowest ecological impact of all energy storage technologies and is unlike most other conventional energy storage systems that rely on toxic substances such as lead, zinc or cadmium. VRB Power is publicly listed on the TSX Venture Exchange ("VRB") and the OTC Pinksheets ("VRBPF").
