There was also the problem of a poor roll out
Not "poor". Perhaps you mean the esssential "there was also the problem of rolling out a network".

Reliance’s network impresses Alcatel

Tuesday, 06 April , 2004, 16:27

Terming the telecom network of Reliance Infocomm as one of the "most impressive" in the world, the French telecom major Alcatel is trying to strike a "network management outsourcing" deal with it and is also exploring the possibility of manufacturing CDMA equipment in a big way.

"What you can do in Europe in 10 years, Reliance has done in just two years. The network built by Reliance is most impressive," Etienne Fouques, Executive Vice President and member of Alcatel’s Executive Committee told PTI.

Asked whether Alcatel would also get into CDMA based equipment manufacturing, Fouques said "we are observing and exploring the possibility of getting into it. We have little exposure in this technology but we have to look at further options".

"As of now we are GSM manufacturers and we don't have the CDMA radio," he added.

Alcatel has also made an attempt to get a network management contract from Reliance Infocomm. "We have made an offer to them (Reliance). This will translate into substantial savings. But no decision has yet been taken in this regard."

With broadband as Alcatel’s new thrust area, the company could get an advantage as Reliance Infocomm is in the process to offer broadband services on its nation-wide optical fibre network.

Reliance Infocomm, which started commercial operations only last year has managed to get more than seven million subscribers for its CDMA based mobile services.
