We (in Toronto) picked up a little Mazda Protege cheap with 13K kilometers on it from a rental agency in for scooting around town in 96. It's closing in on 280K kilometers now and is still peppy, handles great and is terrific in the snow (with good tires). I'm tough on vehicles and press their limits. I've also rented other Mazda's including the Tribute, all nice rides.

Only real negatives have been the exhaust and batteries. Mind you we are in Canada and drive it a lot. Mazda parts are not all cheap up here. Recently needed to change the catalytic converter.. Mazda dealer price 800 loonies, after market piece only 180$ installed...

Ford owns Mazda though (or a good chunk) notice the Ford Escape and Mazda Tribute.. same vehicle but when I was shopping for one the Mazda was trimmed better. Will Mazda sink to Ford's level or will Ford rise to Mazda's level ?
Haven't compared recently ...
