Our haemoglobin, endothelial cells and corneas are much the same as long ago [I suppose]. They are probably fairly well tuned to the chemistry in which we live. Along with the swarms of other things, such as nerve function, lymph systems, bone chemistry and so on. But the horsepower in our heads has NOT been finely tuned. Or even coarsely tuned. The difference between the smartest humans and the average is huge. It's not just a small gap. It's very large. The brainpower is contained in the same wet chemistry, but the function is very, very different. So, if the smartest 5% get to do more reproducing over a few generations, and the bottom 20% miss out on having grandchildren, you can see that over 500 years, we could get several standard deviations of IQ improvement. I know eugenics is supposed to be out of fashion and we are supposed to express horror at the idea, but every day, women [and men] are rejecting mutant inadequates, and even quite reasonable sort of people, who are from then on excluded from the gene pool. Eugenics is alive and well and busy busy busy. Women are putting, and have always put, a lot of evolutionary pressure on brainpower [which is of course why humans have high-powered brains]. Left to their own devices, blokes would get by on beer and pizza, sleeping under a hedge with an old sack for warmth. Nature would get nowhere with the useless layabouts, so it decided to put some pressure on. Hey presto, we get up on our hind legs, keep our fur trimmed and tidy, wash off some of the bear smell which is our natural odour [pong] and try to speak nicely like real gentlemen. Nature, and women, are merciless! There's no room for the inadequate. So, while you might have 2GB of DNA twisted pair, most of it is just engine room stuff. It's the last little bit, or byte, which matters. Sure we have emotions. Those make us go. But we have brains to keep us on the straight and narrow and control our emotions with applied intelligence. The importance of brains can be seen from the effect of alcohol! Uncontrolled emotions go on the rampage [which is fun in a safe environment, though not in the morning]. Gosh DJ, you were wrong again! You are getting greedy. That's all the wrongs you are allowed. Mqurice
