If the terrorists, as Bush insists, respect only forceful response, then they must have no respect for the US. Our response against Al Qaeda has been anemic. bin Laden is still on the loose, Al Qaeda has grown stronger.

The war in Iraq has been the best recruiting tool they could have ever dreamed of. bin Laden had already stated to the faithful to beware that the US will try to take over an oil rich country in the middle east. I'd say that this war in Iraq weakened us against terrorists.

There never was a clear plan for ending the war. Instead we get this lame beg the UN to figure out who and how to hand power over to the Iraqi people...in 9 weeks. If this works out and the Iraqi people are truly freed...I'll be eternally amazed...and grateful.

While being hopeful that power can be turned over in this last minute (eye on the election) manner, I'm worried that peace will never have a chance as the insurgents will not recognize the new interim government. Terrorist and insurgents see that they can control Iraq by simply waging a gorilla war and a war of internal intimidation.

My worst fear is that a new Saddam will emerge out of the rubble. The new Saddam will make the old Saddam look like a falafil vendor by comparison.

All of this could have been avoided by cool heads working with the family of nations to assist the Iraqi people. If we have learned nothing else from this mis-adventure, it should be that we can never, I mean never, deviate from the Powell doctrine ever again.
