HIV/AIDS is a different beast. It's an STD... AIDS has a 5-10 year incubation period... Before then, it's detectible only through a blood test. That's a problem in 3rd world countries where they've not the facilities/education to prevent transmission (e.g.s failure of med. facilities to keep aseptic conditions, lack of protected sex in sex trade, etc.).

SARS is readily detectible, most patients recover and transmission can be prevented using simple quarantine. Evidence has shown that it's not transmitted during the incubation phase - only during the phase where symptoms show (severe fever, coughing etc.). Our experience in Canada has been that medical workers in hospitals were particularly susceptible because they were closely exposed to symptomatic patients (esp. when doing intubation).

We all fear pandemics and like to ponder about the next big one. Mark my works SARS doesn't cut it.
