Probably because Canadian treatment of native people was different than in the U.S. The Canadian west was settled later than the U.S. west. The Canadian government had the benefit of seeing the violence of the "Indian wars" with the plains tribes after settlers and miners moved west.

As the government wanted to avoid the frontier wars of the U.S. the North-West Mounted Police (later the RCMP) was formed before significant settlement of the Canadian west. One of their main objectives was to establish and maintain friendly relations with the native peoples.

Also, by this time the buffalo were disappearing which made it easier to negotiate treaties which moved the various tribes onto reserves.
