there is probably no other issue that would fire me up and radicalize me as much as any attempt to reinstate the draft.

Your response is interesting and adamant. Can you tell me why you feel so strongly?

Here is my view:

The all-volunteer force has worked well during a relative peace, but I do believe they will not be sufficient for a prolonged and expanded war such as what we appear to have before us.

It's a lot easier to send someone else's child/sibling/parent/loved one off to war than it is to send our own. So perhaps, if everyone knew they would have to participate, the country may think more carefully about starting a conflict.

Personally, I prefer wars where the whole country is involved and there is no one sitting on the curb and clapping (so to speak).

On the other hand, should the draft be reinstated, I would take any loved one of mine who stood to be drafted out of the country before I would allow him/her to go to a war like Iraq.

So I guess on a cognitive level, I support a draft, and on an emotional level I do not.

Hi James,

I haven't been following this thread as it is too busy for me to keep up, but i did remember our conversation, and was curious as to your take on this?

"Many, if not most, of the soldiers in this latest Iraq-bound wave are already veterans of several tours in Iraq and Afghanistan," he wrote. "They have honorably completed their active duty obligations. But like draftees, they have been conscripted to meet the additional needs in Iraq."
