The Japanese were more fanatically suicidal than the Muslims, and when their cause was hopeless, most of them stopped.

Of course their cause is hopeless. Even you cannot think that the suicide bombers among the Palestinians are making it any more likely that Israel will cease to exist, and concede all of "Palestine" to Arabs. Even you cannot think that Osama is any closer to defeating the Great Satan and rallying the Muslim world to eschew modernization in favor of Shari'ah states. Terrorism is influential on the margins, it has not achieved any major aim, and, in fact, has been counter- productive.

Suicide bombing is an accepted method of achieving heroic status in the Mideast.

Why? Where do they learn such "interesting" ideas?

It's not in any tenet of Islam that I've seen..

Nor is there any particular history of suicide bombings in Islam. Certainly assassinations and fanaticism, but not suicide bombings where the attacker absolutely sought to die.

I believe this is a recent teaching, promoted by radicalized clerics without regard for the sanctity of human life.

But I have often stated that the key to diffusing the power of the militants is to economically empower the growing youth in the population.
